Can Sunshine Prevent Multiple Sclerosis Weve invested the last few decades preaching about how important it is to stay out of the sun. Weve understood precisely how real a risk skin cancer can be and are doing almost everything we can think of to prevent it from happening. We wear many layers of the highest SPF sunscreens that we can buy. We fit huge old floppy hats on our heads. Even throughout the hottest conditions of the year we make ourselves put on long sleeves and pants. We try to stick to the shady areas-some individuals have even taken to carrying parasols around with them to keep the sun from ever making contact with their skin. Now we are starting to understand that sunlight can really help us. Can you actually be helped by the sunshine
There is a new study that shows people who let themselves get some exposure to direct sunlight aren't as likely to come down with MS as people who take steps to minimize sunlight contact on skin. The study was originally performed to discover how Vitamin D affects the progression of Multiple Sclerosis. It quickly became apparent, though, that the Vitamin D generated in our bodies as a reaction to sunlight is what is really at the root of things.
We've known for a very long time that sunshine and Vitamin D can impede the way the immune system plays a role in MS. This distinct study, though, is focused on how the sun's rays affects the people who are starting to experience the very earliest of MS symptoms. This study is trying to figure out the effects of Vitamin D and the sun's rays on the precursory signs or symptoms of the disease.

Unfortunately, there are not all that many approaches to truly quantify the study's hypothesis. This study is seeking to confirm whether or not sunlight can truly help a person prevent Multiple Sclerosis. Unfortunately, the researchers discovered, the only way to that is to watch people over the course of their lives. This is just about the only way to seriously measure the levels of Vitamin D that are already present in a person's blood before the precursors to MS start to become apparent. As it appears right now, people with regular sun exposure seem to have fewer MS symptoms, particularly in the beginning, than those who live in darker and colder climates-but this was already widely known.
The fact that the risk of acquiring skin cancer goes up proportionally to the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight (without protection) is also a problem. So, if you make an effort to stop one disease, you could be helping to induce the other one. Of course, when it gets found quickly, skin cancer is very treatable and can even be cured. This isn't true for MS.
So should you raise your exposure to the sun so that you dont get MS Talk to the medical doctor to figure out if this is an excellent idea. Your health care provider will figure out if you are in danger for the disease (and how much) by checking out your genetics, medical history and current health. From there your doctor may help you discover the best ways to keep the disease at bay.
